Cruise Planning Alcohol Rules
It’s very important to be aware of what you may or may not bring on board ship with you. Your ‘luggage is scanned‘ in most cases and the liquor in your bags, if discovered, is subject to being seized until the cruise is over.
Cruise lines have ‘strict policies‘ in place for a number of reasons.
Yes, they do want you to purchase your drinks on board but also, the cruise lines are taking the necessary steps to avoid ‘alcohol misuse‘, keeping your family cruise vacation safe at all times.
Have a look at cruisecritic.com and their article on Carnival Cruise Lines alcohol policies. It will give you a general idea on what’s acceptable and what is not when cruise planning.
As well, they offer links to various other cruise lines for detailed information on their policies.
A ‘few facts‘ to consider when cruise planning:
- The legal drinking age on most cruises is 21 years for all alcoholic beverages.
- Carrying liquor on board ship is strictly prohibited with the exception in most cases of a bottle of wine per passenger. ( check individual cruise lines liquor policies) Fees will be added should you wish to take your wine from your cabin.
- All liquor purchased while in ports and as duty free will be held until you disembark.
Pretty straight forward and if you try to ‘smuggle some liquor‘ on board ship, be prepared to have it taken away!

People come up with all kinds of cruise planning ideas to hide their liquor from security staff and do get a way with it quite often. People will hide vodka in water bottles, purchase fake covers for containers and fill them with alcohol, to putting liquor into baby bottles.
You name it, people will try anything to get it on board!
Just remember, if you want to save embarrassment and additional screening, then I suggest you consume your liquor while onshore and purchase your alcoholic beverages on board.
After all, isn’t it a part of the enjoyment of a cruise holiday anyway?
Enjoying that tropical drink served directly to your cabin or sitting out on deck enjoying that beautiful tropical sunset?
On our voyages, there were always daily specials which most often included a souvenir glass as well.
We have found, in most cases, drinks were priced reasonably and affordable for most.
All inclusive cruise deals are excellent, but remember, the majority of cruise lines do not include alcoholic beverages.
